2010

Ne chAt that point, the PRE-SAFE system prepares the vehicle The system is based on the concept that a panic stop, skid or rapid evasive maneuver signals an impending collision. The simplest example is tightening the seat belts for extra protection, but that's only one step the system takes. When it does, the system swings into action to protect the driver and passengers. The system is designed to sense that an accident is imminent.

In 2003, Mercedes introduced the PRE-SAFE system in some of its cars, which took Mercedes safety to another level. They pioneered over 2,500 car safety inventions. Here's just a short list of Mercedes-Benz safety innovations that we all pretty much take for granted in modern cars: * A safety steering column to protect the driver * Crumple zones in various areas of the vehicle (which was in production by 1953) * Side impact protection

Airbags Anti-lock brakes Seat belt tensioners Those features demonstrate that Mercedes-Benz is really the source of modern automobile safety. That department became a hotbed of innovation for the carmaker.

Mercedes-Benz formed its own department for safety development 65 years ago, headed by Austrian engineer Bela Barenyi. There was even a joke in a Dudley Moore movie that a Volvo ad should say, "We're boxy, but we're safe." But these days, Mercedes-Benz safety is up there with the best...and it has really always been that way. Nobody else had the reputation for safety they did.  Years ago, you really had ooice when it came to a safe cars - Volvo.

2010 Mercedes-Benz S Class Model nomenclature

In early Mercedes-Benz history, the "S-Class" designation was used colloquially, referring to the letter "S" which designated most of the larger six-cylinder powered vehicles in the company's lineup (but not the luxurious V8-powered 600 limousine). In typical Mercedes-Benz fashion introduced in the late 1920s, the traditional designation of each car consisted of three numbers indicating engine size (up to 770 in the 1930s), and optional letters indicating either engine features ("260D" since the first Diesel of 1936) or body styles ("K" for kompressor (typically a Roots compressor) as in the 1930s 500K or 540K). After World War II, these codes were often carried over from one generation to the next.

Detroit 2010: Mercedes E-Class Cabriolet unveiled

We tend to forget some world debuts at motor shows because we’ve seen the cars before, in pictures that is. It’s because the trend these days is to release info and photos of a car ahead of its official unveiling – case in point being the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet which was shown off in the metal for the first time in Detroit.

The four-seater folding metal roofed (open/close in 20 sec, up to 40 km/h) cabriolet completes the E-Class family and presents a world first in the shape of the Aircap wind deflector, which Mercedes says considerably reduces air turbulence when the top is down. Aircap replaces conventional wind deflectors, which are quite unsightly. The topless E also comes with the latest gen Airscarf neck-level heating system integrated into the back rests of the front seats. It blows warm air from adjustable air vents in the head restraints to warm necks, hence the “scarf” in the name.

A big range of engines are available, from the E 220 CDI BlueEfficiency (170 bhp) to the E 500 with 388 bhp. Safety gadgets such as Attention Assist drowsiness detection system, Pre-Safe predictive occupant protection, intelligent light system and Distronic Plus adaptive cruise control are available.
